Serena Sundell's basketball career at Maryville High School included numerous stops yearly in St. Joseph for conference matchups. This weekend, the standout point guard's college career crosses into her old stomping grounds with the Bill Snyder Women's Basketball Classic.
Sundell and the No. 13 Kansas State Wildcats will face the Missouri Tigers in a non-conference showdown at the Civic Arena Saturday evening.
"I'm just super grateful and blessed to have this opportunity to come play closer to home," Sundell said of the St. Joseph game.
The Kansas State junior heads into the matchup averaging 10.5 points and 4.4 assists per game. She's also shooting a career-best 54.1-percent from the field.
Entering the week, the Wildcats are 7-1, allowing just 52.5 points per game, and have already earned a pair of wins over ranked opponents, including No. 2 Iowa in Iowa City on November 16. Sundell, K-State's second leading scorer, and her teammates set a higher standard for the program during off-season workouts, and the results are showing it.
"We don't want to waste any opportunities. We're trying to take that into every practice. It's easy to go out during gametime and play your hardest and play every possession, but you're going to build your habits in practice. That's what we've been trying to do everyday – hold each other accountable to the standard we want to be playing at."
Sundell will put that standard on display this weekend for friends and family as she returns to northwest Missouri.
Kansas State and Missouri tip off at 5pm Saturday at the Civic Arena. Tickets are available here.
