DES MOINES, Iowa - The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says infrastructure funds are available for a community-based tree planting program in the aftermath of the August 2020 derecho.

The state was hit with severe high winds, snapping and damaging many trees across 27 counties in Iowa.

The Community Forestry Grant Program has a total of $250,000 available to state and local governments, schools and volunteer organizations.

Award recipients will be reimbursed $500 to $5,000 and are required to provide a dollar-for-dollar cash match for purchase of trees and planting materials.

Qualifying public planting lands can include street rights-of-way, parks, school grounds, courthouse lawns, public buildings, fairgrounds, cemetaries, libraries and trails.

Spring applications are due March 1st by the end of the day. To fill out an application or review grant rules you can visit iowadnr.gov/urbanforestry.
