CHILLICOTHE, Mo. - An elderly inmate at the women's prison in Chillicothe has died. According to the Missouri Department of Corrections, 78-year-old Barbara Banning died this past Sunday at the Chillicothe Correctional Center.

Banning was serving a 25-year sentence for the murder of her ex-husband in southern Missouri. In 2006, she pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and first-degree arson.

Banning poured gasoline on her ex-husband while he was sitting in a recliner recovering from knee surgery. She then lit a piece of newspaper on a stove and threw it at him. Neighbors put out the flames, but he died hours later.

The Department of Corrections reports Banning died of apparent natural causes.
