ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - A proposal to adopt a four-day school week was narrowly defeated this week.
The St. Joseph School Board voted down a plan to go from a five-day school week to a four-day school week after hearing from about two dozen attendees during the 90-minute public session comments.
Three members approved of the plan, but four voted against it. Parents voiced their concerns to the board, stating that a four-day week would be too disruptive to their schedules.
However, Superintendent Gabe Edgar and several teachers urged the board to adopt it, stating it would help the district.
Superintendent Edgar says the district is at a crossroads and that the shortened week would attract quality teachers. So far in the Show-Me state, around 170 school districts that have moved to a four-day school week.
