RED OAK, Iowa - While Iowa authorities continue to investigate a recent nitrogen fertilizer spill, we're learning more about just how bad it is.

The spilled product by NEW Cooperative near Red Oak not only spilled into the East Nishnabotna River, but it traveled downstream for several miles into Missouri.

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources has been informed of the incident and is collecting water samples.

Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) officials are urging private well owners in Montgomery, Page, and Fremont counties, especially those near the River, to reach out to their county health department for nitrate testing.

This service, facilitated through Iowa's Grants-to-Counties program, is provided free of charge. The DNR is assisting county health officials by providing lists of registered private wells that may be at risk.

Due to reduced water levels in the River, the concentration of liquid nitrogen fertilizer is higher than usual, raising concerns about elevated nitrate and urea levels that could pose risks to animals.
