Rare occurrence of 2 cicada broods to emerge

Cicadas

The people of Missouri get to experience a once in a lifetime experience. That's because there are two broods of cicadas emerging at the same time, Broods 13 and 19.

The last time they emerged Thomas Jefferson was president. Horticulture specialist, Tamra Reall reminds people to not use pesticides on trees to get rid of the cicadas. It can be very bad for the trees as well as any birds later on this year. Though these two broods are emerging at the same time, those in northeastern Missouri are going to be the only ones to hear both. Here in our listening area and other parts of Missouri we will hear brood 19.

Brood 13 comes out every 17 years and brood 19 comes out every 13 years. The next time these two broods will emerge together will be in 2245.
