KELLERTON, Iowa - The annual Prairie Chicken Festival is back in Ringgold County, Iowa.
Hosted on Saturday, April 6 at the Kellerton Grasslands Bird Conservation Area, this event promises a unique opportunity to witness the courtship rituals of Iowa's prairie chickens.
The festivities kick off before dawn, allowing attendees to observe the mesmerizing courtship dancing and booming of the prairie chickens until around 8 a.m.
Prairie chickens eere reintroduced to Iowa in the 1980s and supplemented with wild birds from western Nebraska.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources emphasizes the importance of catching this display, as the prairie chicken population remains relatively low, with only 65-70 birds in the Grand River Grasslands.
The prairie chickens will continue their courtship rituals throughout the month, with dusk also providing a great viewing opportunity.
