DES MOINES, Iowa The Iowa Department of Natural Resources Fisheries Bureau has initiated its annual walleye collection operation across several lakes in the state.

Clear Lake, Rathbun Reservoir, Storm Lake, and the Iowa Great Lakes are currently the focus of late-night walleye collection efforts.

Crews are deploying gillnets during the night in traditional spawning areas to capture walleyes preparing to spawn.

During this crucial time of year, hatcheries are bustling with activity well into the early hours of the morning as staff work tirelessly to collect walleye eggs.

After harvesting the eggs, the fish are promptly released back into the lake to accommodate the next night's catch.

The ultimate objective is to gather enough fish to produce 141 million walleye fry, which will be distributed to Iowa lakes and fish hatcheries to support the local walleye population.

For those interested in witnessing the operations firsthand, Clear Lake, Rathbun, and Spirit Lake fish hatcheries are open to visitors. Visitors are encouraged to contact the respective hatcheries for information on visiting hours.

This annual walleye collection effort plays a vital role in sustaining the walleye population in Iowa's lakes, ensuring their health and abundance for future generations of anglers.
