DES MOINES, Iowa - A statewide initiative is calling upon Iowans to join forces in protecting the state's at-risk bumble bee populations.
The Iowa Bumble Bee Atlas, a collaboration between several state organizations, is seeking volunteers to help track and monitor native bumble bees across Iowa.
With at least 14 bumble bee species in Iowa, these vital pollinators play a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance by pollinating wildflowers and agricultural crops.
However, several native species face declining populations and an uncertain future. Community scientists play a pivotal role in gathering data on bumble bee populations, contributing to conservation efforts and enhancing scientific understanding.
Volunteers interested in pollinator conservation can participate in the Iowa Bumble Bee Atlas by attending online training events and submitting observations through Bumble Bee Watch.
