JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - As spring unfolds its vibrant colors and warmer days, it also brings forth a wave of newborn wildlife. But before you rush to their rescue, remember: the best place for these young animals is in the wild.
The Missouri Department of Conservation is reminding the public that it's common to spot seemingly abandoned newborns, but interference is rarely necessary. MDC officials say these young animals are seldom orphaned.
They advise against meddling with young birds with feathers hopping on the ground, and if you come across a nestling without feathers, try returning it to its nest if possible.
Rabbits, too, should be left alone. Handling them can cause stress, leading to dire consequences. Officials also emphasize that human scent doesn't prompt wild mothers to abandon their young.
