MDC asking for public on potential hunting season

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - The Missouri Department of Conservation is considering adding a limited antlerless-elk hunting season for residents, and they're seeking public input.

After a successful run of antlered-elk hunting seasons, MDC is eyeing the possibility of expanding the hunt to include antlerless elk.

With the elk population nearing the targeted 500 mark, MDC aims to manage herd size through hunting while keeping elk within designated counties.

Currently estimated at around 320 animals, the herd's growth will be closely monitored, especially with calving season approaching.

The proposed antlerless-elk hunting regulations would mirror those for antlered-elk hunting, including age restrictions, application process, permit costs, and season dates.

The number of permits issued will be determined annually based on staff surveys of elk numbers. MDC encourages public participation in shaping future elk-hunting opportunities.
