JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - Alarming statistics from 2023 revealed a record-high of 35 fatalities in work zone crashes in Missouri, with distracted driving playing a role in 588 work zone incidents and five fatalities.

With April designated as Distracted Driving Awareness Month and National Work Zone Awareness Week taking place this week, the Missouri Department of Transportation is urging motorists to prioritize safety on the road.

Missouri's strategic highway safety plan, Show-Me Zero, promotes four key messages: buckle up, phone down, slow down, and drive sober.

By adhering to these principles and exercising caution on the roads, motorists can contribute to saving lives and reducing accidents in work zones and beyond.
