DES MOINES, Iowa - World Migratory Bird Day is set to take flight tomorrow, celebrating the vital role migratory birds play across continents.
This year’s theme, “Protect Insects, Protect Birds,” underscores the symbiotic relationship between birds and insects.
Over 100 bird species in the Midwest, from Iowa to Missouri, depend on insects as a primary energy source during their migration journeys. Insects fuel the long flights of migratory birds, providing nourishment during stopovers.
To support migratory birds and insects, there are actionable steps individuals can take. People can limit pesticide and fertilizer use to preserve insect populations.
People can also maintain native habitats to provide food and shelter for birds and insects. People are also encouraged to plant native gardens with Iowa flowers and grasses to support local wildlife.
