DES MOINES, Iowa - The Memorial Day weekend, marking the unofficial start of Iowa’s boating season, is upon us. Boaters across the state are preparing their watercraft for the holiday.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is advising boaters to review state boating laws and exercise patience at ramps and on the water.

Recent heavy rains have reduced water clarity and added flood debris to rivers and reservoirs, making caution essential.

Officials add people should be inspecting vessels before heading out, ensuring a designated boat operator abstains from alcohol, and maintaining safe speeds.

Boaters should check lifejackets, fire extinguishers, boat and trailer lights, whistles, and throwable flotation devices. Drain plugs must be removed during transport to prevent the spread of invasive species.

Iowa boasts over 211,000 registered boats. Key safety tips include avoiding alcohol while boating, checking for open ramps and water hazards, ensuring the trailer is road-ready, and filing a float plan with a friend.
