DES MOINES, Iowa - As Memorial Day weekend approaches, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources is urging boaters and anglers to be vigilant in protecting the state's lakes and rivers from aquatic invasive species.
These invasive species, ranging from zebra mussels to Eurasian watermilfoil, pose a significant threat to Iowa's waterways.
They spread rapidly when transported by boats and equipment from one body of water to another, lacking natural controls and wreaking havoc on native species.
Officials with the DNR are emphasizing the importance of the "Clean, Drain, Dry" protocol.
This simple three-step process involves cleaning any plants or mud from boats and equipment, draining all water, and ensuring everything is thoroughly dried before moving to another waterbody.
Failure to follow these guidelines not only accelerates the spread of invasive species but also leads to serious consequences for Iowa's waters.
