CLARINDA, Iowa - A city in Iowa has been recognized as a Dementia Friendly Community by Dementia Friendly America.

Clarinda's designation was achieved after a stakeholders meeting and an application by an action committee comprising Debra Arbuckle, Karen Brandt, Pam Anderson, Jeanine Bradley, and Benjamin McKim.

The Dementia Friendly Clarinda initiative aims to raise awareness about dementia in the community.

This collaborative effort involves city departments, businesses, and community members to better support individuals living with dementia and their caregivers.

The initiative includes educational sessions for businesses and community members and the creation of a centralized list of resources, with plans to develop additional support resources in the future.

The initiative aligns with broader efforts to make communities across the state more informed, safe, and respectful for those living with dementia.

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, over 62,000 people in Iowa live with dementia, a number expected to rise as the population ages.
