SHENANDAOH, Iowa - An Iowa non-profit organization is reminding older residents of the legal assistance available to them through disaster recovery and a special justice project.

Iowa Legal Aid is holding a free presentation at the Shenandoah Public Library next Monday at 2 p.m. Attorney Josh Gaul, who has been with Iowa Legal Aid since 2009, will lead the session.

Gaul will cover two key projects: the disaster project, addressing issues from events like the December 2021 derecho, and the Rural Justice Project for Older Iowans, which provides a holistic legal checkup for Iowans over 60.

The Rural Justice Project, funded by the federal Administration for Community Living, offers legal assessments without income or asset limitations, covering topics like Medicaid, elder abuse, and advanced directives.

Gaul emphasizes the importance of tools like power of attorney for making decisions when individuals can no longer do so themselves.

Iowa Legal Aid also assists with living wills and general legal issues for low-income Iowans, including housing law, domestic violence protection, and debt management.
