DES MOINES, Iowa - It's National Pollinator Week, and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources encourages you to support local bees and butterflies by planting pollinator-friendly native plants.

Officials with the Iowa DNR suggest adding native plants to your yard, garden, or flower bed. Native species are best because they're adapted to Iowa's environment and familiar to local pollinators.

Planting diverse species and arranging them in groups can significantly benefit bees and butterflies.

Some tips to support pollinators include reducing lawn areas, avoiding pesticides, planting a variety of flowers and shrubs, and using native plants.

Also, consider leaving parts of your yard undisturbed over winter to provide habitat for hibernating bees and caterpillars. For more information on native plants, visit the Iowa DNR website.
