MoDOT to close St. Joseph bridge later this month

construction plans

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - The rehabilitation of the Cook Road Bridge over U.S. Interstate 29 in St. Joseph is set to begin on Monday, June 17.

Clarkson Construction Company, in collaboration with the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT), will close the roadway from 38th Street to just east of the bridge at the driveway entrance to Renovations Church.

Access to Chris Hessler Road will also be closed, requiring motorists to find alternate routes.

The project will involve widening the bridge, replacing its driving surface, and adding a pedestrian sidewalk with decorative fencing on the south side.

The work is expected to be completed by October 2024. During construction, there will be three periods when I-29 will be closed in both directions for bridge demolition, girder placement, and painting, with detours on I-229.

Overnight lane closures on I-29 may also occur between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m., with a 12-foot width restriction in place.

MoDOT reminds drivers to buckle up, keep phones down, slow down, and move over in work zones. For 24/7 information, call 888-ASK-MODOT (275-6636) or follow MoDOT on social media.
