State of Missouri releases May jobs report

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - The latest job numbers are out for the Show-Me state.

Missouri's nonfarm payroll employment rose by 5,900 jobs last month, while the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate increased slightly to 3.5%. Private industry added 4,000 jobs, and government employment grew by 1,900 jobs.

Over the past year, Missouri saw an increase of 82,000 jobs, with the unemployment rate rising from 2.9% in May 2023 to 3.5% last month. Goods-producing industries added 1,300 jobs, with manufacturing gaining 1,500.

Private service-providing industries saw a net increase of 2,700 jobs, led by leisure and hospitality with 1,700 new jobs. Government employment grew by 1,900 jobs, primarily at the local level.

The total number of unemployed Missourians was 109,398 in May 2024, an increase from April's revised figure of 105,408. Missouri's labor force participation rate was 63.4%, higher than the national rate of 62.5%.
