Biosecurity upgraded for cows at MO State Fair

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - The Missouri Department of Agriculture has announced updated biosecurity protocols for dairy cattle at the 2024 Missouri State Fair, scheduled for August 8-18 in Sedalia.

All lactating dairy cattle must have a negative H-5-N-1 influenza test within seven days before arriving at the fairgrounds.

Additionally, lactating cows should be milked using personal milking machines as the fairgrounds' milking parlor will be unavailable.

These measures are precautionary to protect the dairy industry, despite no detected cases of H5N1 influenza in Missouri dairy cattle.

Results can be reported upon arrival at the fair. Exhibitors must collect milk using portable milking machines to prevent potential virus spread.

The fair staff will assist in disposing of the milk, ensuring it does not enter the food supply. For more information, visit agriculture.mo.gov or see the full Missouri State Fair schedule at mostatefair.com.
