Fishing regulations being eased at area lake

CRESTON, Iowa - The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is easing fishing regulations at McKinley Lake in Creston as the city prepares to drain the lake in August for a restoration project.

Constructed in the 1870s, McKinley Lake has suffered from sediment and nutrient accumulation, impacting its water quality and recreational use.

To improve the lake, Creston’s Park and Recreation Board has been working on reducing sediment and nutrient inflow.

The final restoration phase includes dredging, enhancing shoreline access, and adding fish habitats, a fishing pier, and small boat access points.

Effective immediately, anglers with a valid fishing license can harvest any size or number of fish species, including largemouth bass, bluegill, and channel catfish.

Anglers can use any number of fishing poles or jug fishing, and trot lines are allowed with proper identification. However, fish cannot be sold or stocked into public waters, and all navigation rules apply.
