JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - Missouri Gov. Mike Parson recently signed into law House Bills 2134 and 1956, comprehensive legislation regulating the land application of industrial wastewater, sludge, and related process wastes.
This bill, which passed with overwhelming support in the General Assembly, aims to safeguard Missouri's water resources and property rights.
Sponsored by Reps. Dirk Deaton and Ed Lewis, the legislation mandates waste disposal companies to conduct tests for heavy metals, pathogens, and other pollutants before constructing storage lagoons for animal byproducts.
Additionally, the bill requires groundwater monitoring wells to prevent seepage into water bodies. The initiative stems from complaints about environmental hazards and odors from waste storage in southwest and central Missouri.
The bill closes a loophole exploited by waste disposal companies, ensuring a minimum regulatory framework for land application.
