DES MOINES, Iowa - As the Fourth of July holiday approaches, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources is urging the public to prioritize safety while enjoying state parks, beaches, lakes, and rivers.

For beach and swimming safety, wearing life jackets is crucial, and alcohol should be avoided while swimming. In terms of boating safety, avoid consuming alcohol and always have a designated operator.

When visiting state parks and campgrounds, pack essentials such as water, snacks, and bug spray. For paddling safety, always wear a life jacket and never paddle alone.

Check weather and river conditions before heading out, and inform someone of your paddling plans and expected return time. Regarding fireworks safety, remember that fireworks are prohibited in state parks, except for sparklers.

Supervise children around fireworks, keep them pointed away from people, and have a bucket of water on hand. For more tips on safety this holiday weekend, visit the Iowa DNR's website.
