DES MOINES, Iowa - The Iowa Legislature has allocated state infrastructure funds to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources for a community-based tree planting program aimed at recovering from the 2020 derecho.
The Community Forestry Grant Program offers reimbursable grants to purchase and plant trees suitable for Iowa in the 27 counties included in the Governor’s disaster proclamation.
A total of $146,500 is available for state and local governments, schools, and volunteer and service organizations. Grants range from $500 to $10,000, and no matching funds are required.
Eligible planting sites include street rights-of-way, parks, school grounds, courthouse lawns, public buildings, fairgrounds, cemeteries, libraries, and trails, though DNR lands are not eligible.
Applications and rules are available online at iowadnr.gov. Applications are due by 4:30 p.m. on Monday, August 26.
