JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - The Missouri Department of Commerce and Insurance is joining the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in observing Vehicle Theft Prevention Month this July.
Vehicle theft is a costly crime, with more than one million vehicles stolen in 2023, resulting in over $8 billion in losses. This marks a 25% increase in vehicle thefts over the past few years.
Precautionary measures include parking in well-lit areas, locking windows and doors, hiding valuables, not leaving keys in the vehicle, and not leaving the vehicle running unattended.
Additionally, consider purchasing anti-theft systems and keeping electronic transmission technology active to assist law enforcement in case of theft.
If your vehicle is stolen, promptly contact local law enforcement and your insurance carrier with all relevant details.
Note that personal items in the vehicle may not be covered by your auto insurance and might require a claim under your homeowners or renters policy.
