JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - Missouri Gov. Mike Parson signed a massive crime law earlier this month, including one inspired by the death of a K-9 officer in St. Joseph.
State Sen. Tony Luetkemeyer's Senate Bill 754, known as "Max's Law," enhances penalties for injuring or killing law enforcement K-9s.
The bill is named after St. Joseph Police Department K-9 Max, who was killed in June 2021. Luetkemeyer says passing a law has been priority of his since the incident.
The bill also bans celebratory gunfire under "Blair's Law," establishes a cyber-crimes task force, removes parole for juveniles convicted of second-degree murder, and creates new penalties for fleeing arrest.
The new laws will take effect on Aug. 28.
