JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - After several hot days and weeks already this summer, gardeners are advised to take precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses.

Horticulture specialists with the University of Missouri Extension Office recommend doing garden tasks early in the morning or late in the evening to beat the heat.

They emphasize the importance of staying hydrated, using sunscreen, and wearing protective gear such as sunglasses and a broad-brimmed hat.

They also suggest limiting garden tasks to 10-20 minutes at a time, taking frequent breaks, and knowing when to stop to avoid heat exhaustion.

Signs of heat exhaustion include lightheadedness, weakness, nausea, headache, confusion, muscle cramps, excessive sweating, and irritability.

If heatstroke is suspected, call 911 immediately. Gardeners should be mindful of their bodies and take necessary breaks during high temperatures.
