MoDOT to close down major highway next week

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - The Missouri Department of Transporation (MoDOT) says a major closure is happening next week.

The north and southbound lanes of U.S. Interstate 29 through St. Joseph will close from 4 a.m. Tuesday, July 16 to 4 a.m. Friday, July 19.

Clarkson Construction Company and MoDOT will close the interstate to demolish the existing deck, install new beams, and paint the girders of the Cook Road Bridge.

Traffic will follow the same detour onto U.S. Interstate 229 as earlier this month. Local traffic won't have access to certain exits on I-29 during this period.

This closure is part of the Cook Road Bridge rehabilitation project, which includes widening the bridge and adding a pedestrian sidewalk with decorative fencing. The project is expected to be completed by October 2024.

Overnight lane closures on I-29 below the bridge may also occur between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. on various dates, with a 12-foot width restriction in place. For more details, visit modot.org.
