ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - A public informational meeting is scheduled for next month to discuss the future of Lake Contrary.

Buchanan County officials, including an expert on vegetation removal, will be present at 6 p.m. on Thursday, August 1, at the Remington Nature Center, to explain the methods needed to clear the overgrown foliage.

County officials emphasized the importance of eliminating the root systems to prevent clogging during hydro-dredging.

Lake Contrary is located just south of St. Joseph and has become overrun with vegetation and no longer resembles a lake.

County officials estimate that restoring the lake could cost up to $8 million, but believes it is a worthwhile investment for the community's recreational opportunities.

They are committed to funding the project without raising taxes, using existing funds and interest accrued on various accounts.
