Northwest Missouri State University researchers, in partnership with Mosaic Life Care, recently completed a study revealing significant gaps in pediatric mental health resources in six area counties.
The study, led by Doctor Tyler Tapps, found that high costs, limited insurance coverage, stigma, and logistical issues such as transportation and scheduling are major barriers to accessing mental health care for children. Funded by a 100,000 dollars grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration’s Rural Health Network Development Planning Program, the study involved over 70 school counselors and medical providers, and surveyed more than 700 residents across Atchison, Nodaway, Holt, Gentry, Worth, and Andrew counties.
Key findings highlighted dissatisfaction with the coordination between mental health services and schools and a need for better communication between providers and educators.
