State officials encourage firework safety this week

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - Missourians are gearing up to celebrate Independence Day with fireworks, but it’s crucial to check local laws regarding drought, wind warnings, and fireworks legality within city limits before purchasing or lighting fireworks.

When planning your fireworks display, choose a large open area free of flammable materials and keep spectators at a safe distance.

Light one firework at a time and ensure safety measures are in place, such as having a bucket of water, a hose, or a fire extinguisher nearby. Fireworks can cause serious injuries, especially to hands, fingers, legs, eyes, and the head.

In 2022, 324 people in Missouri sought hospital care for fireworks-related injuries. Children aged five-through-nine had the second highest rate of emergency room visits.

To stay safe this Fourth of July, follow the printed directions on fireworks, place fireworks on even ground before igniting and move to a safe distance, keep a bucket of water, hose, and first-aid kit nearby, and submerge used fireworks in water before disposal.

Ensure close adult supervision if older children are involved.
