ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - Fall armyworms have been spotted feeding on grass pastures, summer grass annuals, alfalfa, and soybeans in Missouri.
This pest migrates northward from the south and can cause severe damage to crops, often appearing overnight. Larvae are most active in the mornings and evenings, favoring tall fescue and orchardgrass.
Farmers should scout fields carefully, as infestations may not be uniform. The economic threshold for treatment is three or more larvae per square foot.
Use insecticides labeled for fall armyworm, avoiding pyrethroids due to resistance. Ensure 20 gallons or more of water per acre as a carrier.
