Iowa DNR encouraging boat safety this weekend

DES MOINES, Iowa - As the unofficial end of summer approaches, thousands of Iowans are expected to flock to state parks and waterways for Labor Day weekend.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is urging everyone to follow essential safety measures to ensure a safe and enjoyable holiday.

Boaters should plan ahead to avoid peak times and crowded waterways. Parking in designated areas is required, and vehicles in grass areas will be ticketed and towed.

The DNR emphasizes that alcohol and boating don’t mix; the same as for driving. Always designate a sober operator and ensure everyone on board has a life jacket—children under 13 must wear one at all times.

Boats must also have a United States Coast Guard-approved throwable flotation device if they are 16 feet or longer, along with a charged fire extinguisher and a horn or whistle.

Slow down, watch for other vessels, and steer clear of dams and hazards. Finally, remove drain plugs during transport to prevent the spread of invasive species.
