DES MOINES, Iowa - As the unofficial end of summer starts today, thousands of Iowans are expected to head to state parks and waterways for Labor Day weekend.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) wants to remind everyone to follow essential safety measures, especially when swimming.
To ensure a safe experience, keep young children within arm’s reach at all times and never leave them unattended. Remember that drowning is silent, so stay vigilant. Learning CPR is highly recommended.
Avoid alcohol while swimming, and note that alcohol and glass bottles are prohibited at some public beaches. Always swim with a buddy, stay within designated swimming areas, and wear a life jacket or personal flotation device.
Use sunscreen and stay hydrated. Be aware that Iowa’s public beaches do not have lifeguards on duty. For updated bacteria levels at state park beaches, visit the Iowa DNR website.
