DES MOINES, Iowa - Iowa’s statewide teal-only hunting season runs from Sept. 1-16, offering hunters a chance to hit the wetlands ahead of the regular duck season.
According to Iowa Department of Natural Resoucres, teal are often abundant and not as wary this time of year, making them more accessible to hunters.
The daily bag limit is six teal, including blue-winged, green-winged, and cinnamon species, with shooting hours from sunrise to sunset.
Wetland conditions are better than previous drought years, thanks to timely spring rains, though precipitation has slowed recently.
Officials advise hunters to scout wetlands beforehand and get familiar with identifying teal to increase their success. Hunters need a state migratory game bird fee, a federal duck stamp, a hunting license, and habitat fee.
They must also register for the Harvest Information Program through the Go Outdoors Iowa app or webpage before hunting any migratory game birds.
