MDSS launches Missouri SuN Bucks program

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - The Missouri Department of Social Services has launched a new program called Missouri SuN Bucks, aimed at helping families buy food for school-aged children during the summer months.

Under the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Summer Electronic Benefits Transfer Program, families will receive a one-time benefit of $120 per qualifying child to use at authorized locations across Missouri.

Most eligible families will automatically receive the benefit without needing to apply. However, those who do need to apply have until August 31, to do so.

The program primarily supports children from families already participating in SNAP or Temporary Assistance, as well as children in foster care, homeless, or attending schools that offer free or reduced-price meals.

The program faced some technical challenges during its first year, leading to possible delays in issuing benefits. The Missouri SuN Bucks initiative aims to address childhood hunger during summer when school meals are unavailable.
