MO prisons enhance security with new scanners

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - The Missouri Department of Corrections has started using body scanners at its adult facilities to enhance security and prevent dangerous contraband from entering.

As of Aug. 1, the scanners are being used for staff, visitors, vendors, contractors, and volunteers entering specific institutions.

The rollout schedule was adjusted, with implementation at Western Reception, Diagnostic & Correctional Center in St. Joseph, beginning on Aug. 29 instead of Sept. 1 to avoid service disruptions during Labor Day.

The Intercept full-body scanners will work alongside metal detectors and X-ray baggage scanners to detect weapons, drugs, and other prohibited items.

The scanning process takes just four seconds, capturing an image for review while storing the ID information of each person scanned.

Visitors aged 18 and older are required to undergo the scan unless they have an approved medical exception.
