TABOR, Iowa - An Iowa nursing home has filed for bankruptcy and disclosed it owes Iowa taxpayers over $1 million in unpaid fees.
According to Southern District of Iowa court records, the for-profit facility, Tabor Manor Care Center in Fremont County, filed for bankruptcy in May, listing $1.3 million in assets and $2.3 million in liabilities.
The home owes $1.1 million in Quality Assurance Assessment fees that haven't been collected since 2019.
QAA fees, in place since 2009, are designed to increase nursing home expenses, allowing facilities to receive higher Medicaid reimbursements from the federal government, which should boost caregiver wages.
Officials with the nursing home stated the facility deferred these payments during the pandemic and attempted to negotiate a repayment plan with the state, but the proposed terms were unmanageable.
