St. Joseph man drowns at Smithville Lake

SMITHVILLE, Mo. - A tragic incident occurred at Smithville Lake over the weekend, resulting in the drowning of a 66-year-old man from St. Joseph.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says that David Moore died Saturday afternoon at Crows Creek Cove. Authorities say Moore was helping several children onto a boat when one began drifting away.

In an attempt to retrieve the child, Moore dove into the water but never resurfaced. The incident happened around 4:30 p.m. as Moore tried to ensure the children’s safety. No other details have been released.
