Aug. 28, 2024St. Joseph, Mo. | By: Jeremy Werner
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - Thursday, Aug. 29 is International Overdose Awareness Day, a global event aimed at reducing the stigma of drug-related deaths and preventing overdoses.
It will be observed in St. Joseph on the same day at 7 p.m., with the Buchanan County Alliance for Substance Abuse Prevention organizing a remembrance event at Civic Center Park at City Hall.
The evening will begin with a proclamation reading, followed by the City Hall being illuminated in purple light. Attendees will participate in a "Circle of Hope" after sunset, using purple flashlights provided at the event.
The event also offers free remembrance materials, naloxone, and information on local recovery resources. Those who have lost loved ones to overdose are encouraged to bring photos or artifacts to display in tribute.
The public is invited to attend, share stories, and learn more about the impact of substance use disorder. This event aims to challenge the stigma around overdose and show community support for those affected.
