ATLANTIC, Iowa - The Atlantic Police Department responded to a social media threat on September 8, 2024, targeting two district school buildings.

After an investigation, authorities determined the threat was not credible, and students and staff are safe to attend school on Sept. 9.

However, a 12-year-old juvenile has been taken into custody and charged with Threats of Terrorism and False Reports. The juvenile was transported to a detention center.

Due to the seriousness of the situation, the Atlantic Police Department will maintain an increased presence at all Atlantic Community School District buildings throughout the week.

The investigation involved collaboration with the Cass County Sheriff’s Office and the Iowa Governor’s School Safety Bureau.

Anyone with additional information is asked to contact the Atlantic Police Department at 712-243-3512.
