Iowa DNR: State sees below average rainfall

drought stricken ground

DES MOINES, Iowa - State officials report that August saw below-average rainfall in Iowa, breaking the trend of wetter conditions from earlier this year.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) says the state received 3.2 inches of rain in August, nearly one inch below normal, with 40% of Iowa now experiencing abnormally dry conditions.

However, officials note that "abnormally dry" is not yet considered drought. Despite the dry August, Iowa has seen more than 38 inches of rain in the past 12 months, a significant improvement from 2022-23.

Hall says rainfall in eight of the last 10 months has been above average, helping the state recover from drought conditions seen over the past four years.

With September typically marking the start of drier months, Hall emphasizes the importance of additional rain to recharge soil moisture and groundwater before winter. For more details, visit the Iowa DNR website.
