DES MOINES, Iowa - The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is reminding lake property owners to check their boats, trailers, docks, and lifts for aquatic invasive species before storing them for the winter.
Invasive species like zebra mussels can hitchhike on water equipment, creating serious problems for Iowa's waterways.
The DNR advises people to clean off any plants, animals, or mud from equipment, drain water from all areas, and dry everything thoroughly before moving to a new location.
It's illegal to possess or transport aquatic invasive species or plants, and boaters must drain water and remove drain plugs before transporting equipment. For more details, visit iowadnr.gov/ais.
