MU Extension Office warns of upcoming freeze

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - With frost expected soon in northern Missouri, it’s time to start thinking about protecting plants, according to the University of Missouri Extension.

Their FrostFreeze Probabilities Guide shows frost is likely within two weeks for the northern part of the state, with central Missouri seeing frost around October 20th, and the southern region around November 1.

Officials advice bringing tropical plants indoors, as they can suffer chill injury at temperatures below 45 degrees.

Most other plants can survive until temperatures hit 28 degrees, while cool-season flowers and vegetables can withstand even lower temperatures.

Officials note that while gardeners can protect plants with insulating materials, the fall season is simply prolonging the inevitable.
