U.S. Army Corps to study MO River to prevent future flooding

OMAHA, Neb. - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is conducting a study to explore ways to prevent future flooding along the Missouri River, following devastating floods in 1993, 2011, and 2019.

The study, requested by the governors of Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, and Iowa, focuses on flood-prone areas like Holt County in northwest Missouri, which suffered severe damage in 2019.

Holt County's levees provide inconsistent protection, creating "pinch points" where water builds up. Efforts to raise levees have sometimes made flooding worse by restricting the river further.

The study is part of a broader effort by the four Midwestern states to find long-term solutions for managing the river.

Officials say it's the most in-depth review of Missouri River management since the levees were built in the 1950s, with a draft expected next year and completion by 2026.
