Dry conditions persist in Missouri River Basin

OMAHA, Neb. - Runoff in the upper Missouri River Basin was well below average in September, continuing the trend seen throughout 2024, according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

John Remus, chief of the Corps’ Missouri River Basin Water Management Division, reported in a news release that while parts of the upper portion of the River Basin saw wetter-than-normal conditions, much of the basin experienced dry and warm weather.

This caused September runoff to be only 66 percent of the average above Sioux City, and 81 percent of the basin remains under drought conditions.

Due to low runoff, releases from Gavins Point Dam have been increased to maintain navigation flow downstream.

However, navigation flow support will end on December 1, and winter releases from Gavins Point will be at least 12,000 cubic feet per second.

Water users below Gavins Point are urged to assess potential risks from these planned low winter releases.
