DES MOINES, Iowa - As Iowa heads into fall harvest season, the risk of wildfires is rising due to dry conditions, low humidity, and high temperatures.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is reminding farmers to take fire prevention steps to protect themselves and their fields.
Farmers are encouraged to properly maintain machinery, ensure fire extinguishers are fully charged, and clean off combustible debris from equipment.
It's also advised to properly service grain storage and drying equipment, store hay safely, and till fire breaks around structures and fields. If a fire breaks out, farmers should remain calm and call 911 immediately.
