Iowa experts concerned about increasing drought conditions

DES MOINES, Iowa - Drought conditions across Iowa are causing major concerns for fisheries experts as rivers and streams are reaching critically low levels heading into winter.

That's why the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is warning residents that if the state experiences a harsh winter, the low flows could lead to rivers freezing to the bottom, putting fish survival at risk.

In some parts of Iowa, calls have already come in about yellow perch and channel catfish stranded in low water pools in rivers. Some bodies of water in the state have dropped 20 inches since July.

While rain this week may help, DNR officials say more consistent rainfall is needed to replenish moisture levels before winter sets in.
