Iowa furbearer season kicks off this weekend

DES MOINES, Iowa - Iowa’s furbearer season kicks off Saturday, November 2 with steady populations across most species and a positive outlook on fur prices.

However, the dry conditions in many marshes and streams could pose challenges for trapping aquatic animals like otters and muskrats.

That's why the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is encouraging preseason scouting as water levels vary greatly across regions.

A new rule now allows youth under 15 to trap with a licensed adult without needing a license, providing them an opportunity to experience trapping firsthand.

Additionally, the DNR is seeking help from trappers for a gray fox population study, offering a $400 reward for live-caught gray foxes used in research to track movements and habitat preferences.

The season runs through February 28, with beaver trapping extending to April 15.
